On May 1, 2017, Springfield Township began replacing all of its street lights with new energy-efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps. The initial investment will pay for itself in approximately nine years through electricity savings. However, in addition to being more energy-efficient, the new lights emit a whiter, brighter light that can be directed downward onto the streets in order to eliminate horizontal bleeding onto private properties.
The new lights may initially seem to be too bright to some residents. However, that is because many of the older street lights are dimmer than they should be and are no longer functioning as originally intended. The new lights will provide a more uniform light pattern, enhance visibility for pedestrians and motorists, and improve overall safety in our community. The Township hopes that over time its residents will appreciate the energy savings, reliability and safety that the new lights will bring.
